Liverpool scored ten times against Oulu at Anfield on 1 October 1980, with Graeme Souness and Terry McDermott each completing a hat-trick. A European Cup first-round tie which had stood at 1–1 after the visit to Finland ended 11–2 on aggregate.
Kenny Dalglish helped make the difference. He supplied both of Souness's opening goals, the first after five minutes, then crossed for McDermott to score the third. Liverpool were four ahead at half-time, although ownership of that fourth goal briefly needed sorting out: Dalglish's effort was already travelling towards the net when McDermott arrived to finish it. The goal went to McDermott.
Keith Armstrong scored for Oulu soon after the interval. Liverpool's response was another six goals. Souness completed his treble from the penalty spot after being brought down, and Sammy Lee headed in from Ray Kennedy's delivery a minute later.
Kennedy added the seventh before David Fairclough scored twice with headers. McDermott supplied the tenth in the 83rd minute, joining Souness on three goals. Dalglish finished without one, despite his part in constructing the victory.
The crowd of 21,013 had seen Liverpool's biggest European Cup victory.
