Season overview

Liverpool finished second in the Premier League with 84 points, two behind Manchester City, and secured a return to the Champions League. Brendan Rodgers’ side scored 101 league goals and conceded 50. Luis Suárez led the division with 31 goals, followed by Daniel Sturridge with 21; Suárez also won the PFA and football writers’ player-of-the-year awards.

Eleven consecutive league wins from February to April included a 5–1 victory over Arsenal, a 3–0 win at Manchester United and a 3–2 home win over City. A 2–0 defeat by Chelsea ended that run, and Liverpool then surrendered a 3–0 lead to draw at Crystal Palace. They beat Newcastle on the final day but finished runners-up.

Simon Mignolet arrived from Sunderland as Pepe Reina went on loan to Napoli, with Kolo Touré and Mamadou Sakho also joining the defence. Arsenal knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup in the fifth round, while Manchester United ended their League Cup campaign in the third round.

Notes on the record

Overview evidence: paragraph 1 — lfch-league, lfch-scorers, lfc-suarez, lfc-sturridge, lfc-rodgers and lfc-toure; paragraph 2 — lfch-games and lfch-palace; paragraph 3 — lfch-transfers, lfc-reina, lfc-toure and lfch-games.

The eleven wins are consecutive league matches, not all competitions: the FA Cup defeat at Arsenal fell within that period. No unsupported causal claim about a single mistake deciding the title is made.

Suárez’s 31 goals were all in the league; Sturridge scored 24 in all competitions, of which 21 were league goals. The summary compares league totals on the same basis.

Reina’s 2013 loan is distinct from his permanent departure in 2014. Suárez’s July 2014 sale belongs to 2014–15. No European competition or trophy is invented for this campaign.
