Season overview
Liverpool ended eight seasons in the Second Division by winning the championship with 62 points, eight clear of Leyton Orient. The decisive changes came before the campaign began. Ian St John arrived from Motherwell for £37,500 and Ron Yeats from Dundee United for £22,000. St John gave Roger Hunt a new attacking partner, while Yeats became a regular at centre-half and took on the captaincy during the season.
An opening 2–0 win at Bristol Rovers began an unbeaten run of 11 league matches. Liverpool went through the whole league season unbeaten at Anfield, where they won 18 of 21 games. They scored 99 league goals in total, 41 of them from Hunt. His additional FA Cup goal took his competitive total to 42; St John supplied 22 in all competitions. Alan A’Court and Jimmy Melia remained important in attack, while Ian Callaghan established a more substantial first-team role.
Promotion rested on more than the new signings and leading scorers. Gordon Milne, Gerry Byrne, Melia and A’Court played every competitive match, and Tommy Leishman missed only one. Bert Slater kept goal for most of the campaign before the February arrival of Jim Furnell from Burnley. Furnell played the last 13 league games as Liverpool completed the job.
The FA Cup brought a 4–3 victory over Chelsea and an away win at Oldham Athletic, but ended after three fifth-round matches against Preston North End. Two goalless draws were followed by a 1–0 defeat in the second replay at Old Trafford. The central objective was achieved on 21 April, when Kevin Lewis scored both goals in a 2–0 win over Southampton at Anfield. Promotion was secured with five league fixtures still to play. Shankly now had a settled group ready to be tested in the First Division.

Notes on the record
Hunt’s 42 means 41 league goals plus one FA Cup goal. The official Liverpool FC promotion account confirms 42; 41 is a league-only figure. St John scored 18 league and four FA Cup goals.
St John’s 2 May 1961 transfer is deliberately allocated to 1961–62: he was signed for the following campaign, with no competitive 1960–61 appearance. He is not duplicated in 1960–61 transfers.
Furnell and Slater are both key players because they divided the goalkeeping duties, 13 and 34 competitive appearances respectively. Tommy Lawrence did not make a competitive appearance this season and is not presented as part of the promotion first team.
The transfer list includes the major senior changes. Billy Molyneux’s developmental signing and the departures of fringe players Alan Banks, John Nicholson and Bobby Campbell are omitted; none is necessary to explain the promotion side.
The FA Cup fifth round required two replays, not one. No League Cup or European entry is shown. Liverpool won the Second Division title; this is distinct from a First Division championship.

Furnell’s Burnley arrival is £18,000 in LFChistory, but a later contemporary Daily Express report recalls £15,000. The transfer fee is omitted while origin, date and appearances remain corroborated.
