Season overview

Bill Shankly’s first full season ended with Liverpool third in the Second Division again. They collected 52 points, two more than in 1959–60, but finished six behind promoted Sheffield United and seven behind champions Ipswich Town. Fourteen league wins at Anfield were not matched away from home, where Liverpool won seven and lost nine.

The rebuilding was gradual. Kevin Lewis arrived from Sheffield United in June and immediately became the leading scorer, with 22 goals across the league and cups. Roger Hunt contributed 19 and Dave Hickson 17. Gordon Milne joined from Preston North End in August, although he was not yet the ever-present figure he would become. Alf Arrowsmith joined from Ashton United at 17; his competitive first-team debut came the following season.

Bert Slater and Dick White played in all 47 competitive matches, with John Molyneux, Tommy Leishman and Gerry Byrne also carrying substantial workloads. The team was changing around them. Doug Rudham and Laurie Hughes retired after the previous campaign, while Alan Arnell and Jimmy Harrower left during this one. Billy Liddell played his final competitive match in August 1960, closing a playing career that had long connected the side to Liverpool’s earlier successes.

Neither cup offered compensation for another missed promotion. Liverpool beat Coventry City before losing to Sunderland in the FA Cup fourth round. In the inaugural League Cup they needed a replay to eliminate Luton Town and then lost at home to Southampton in the third round. Ian St John and Ron Yeats joined the side for the following campaign.

Domestic cups

Notes on the record

Lewis’s 22 competitive goals comprise 19 league, one FA Cup and two League Cup goals. His official club profile corroborates the specialist scoring table. League-only figures of 19 are not conflicting totals.

The League Cup was entered and is included; no European competition is shown. Competitive totals exclude testimonial, friendly and regional games.

Summer 1960 is assigned to this campaign. Ian St John, signed on 2 May 1961 just before the previous season’s final fixture, is allocated once to 1961–62 because he was recruited for that campaign and made no competitive appearance in 1960–61.

Liddell’s last competitive match is firmly dated, but an exact formal retirement date was not established. The retirement entry explicitly uses his final playing season rather than claiming a precise employment-end date.

Rudham’s contemporary retirement announcement and later South African playing career are distinguished. Hughes is included as a significant long-serving senior departure despite having been outside the first team since 1957.

Arrowsmith is included as a relevant external young signing, not a key player. Minor reserve releases are omitted. Fred Morris’s fee is omitted because no independently corroborated amount was found.

Kevin Lewis’s fee is £13,000 in LFChistory, while the contemporary Daily Mirror transcription reports about £15,000. The amount is omitted. Fred Morris’s destination is independently confirmed by Liverpool FC; his reported £4,000 fee rests on the specialist transfer register and is omitted.

Sammy Reid’s departure to Falkirk is included because it completes the story of Shankly’s first signing. A reputable newspaper obituary establishes the club and 1960–61 involvement, but no precise transfer date or fee is asserted.
