Jan Mølby scored in successive minutes to turn Liverpool's League Cup fourth-round tie against Manchester United at Anfield on 26 November 1985. His equaliser and penalty transformed a 1–0 deficit into the 2–1 victory that sent Liverpool into the quarter-finals.
United's season had begun with ten consecutive league wins, although their form had faltered by the time they reached Anfield. They had lost 3–0 at Leicester three days earlier. Paul McGrath nevertheless gave them the lead after seven minutes, and they held it through half-time.
Kenny Dalglish directed Liverpool from off the pitch, with Paul Walsh and Ian Rush both starting. The decisive contribution came from Mølby in the 57th minute. Winning possession inside his own half, he carried the ball forward towards the Kop before driving a shot past Gary Bailey from near the edge of the penalty area.
A minute later, Mølby converted a penalty to put Liverpool ahead. There were no further goals before the 41,291 crowd.
The equaliser acquired a separate afterlife. A television-rights dispute had kept the match off broadcast television, but United's analysis team had recorded it. Mølby released that footage to LFCTV in 2009, allowing a goal long discussed from spectators' recollections to be seen more widely.
