Graeme Sharp's volley gave Everton a 1–0 win at Anfield on 20 October 1984, ending their 14-year wait for victory on Liverpool's ground. For Joe Fagan's side, the defeat left them seventeenth in the First Division.
Ian Rush returned after a cartilage operation, but his presence did not restore Liverpool's scoring touch. Before half-time, Kenny Dalglish helped put him through against Neville Southall, who saved. At the other end, Bruce Grobbelaar had to stretch to turn away a Gary Stevens free-kick.
The decisive moment came three minutes into the second half. Stevens sent a long pass towards Sharp, whose first touch took him inside Mark Lawrenson. From outside the penalty area, Sharp drove a volley over Grobbelaar and into the net.
Liverpool were unable to recover. Southall kept out a Dalglish free-kick, while Everton continued to threaten a second goal. Peter Reid shot wide after a misplaced Phil Neal pass presented him with a chance.
Everton finished the day fourth. Their neighbours had now won only two of their opening eleven league matches, with Benfica due at Anfield in the European Cup four days later.
