Liverpool completed their championship season with a 3–0 victory at Leeds United on 17 May 1979. David Johnson scored twice and Jimmy Case once at Elland Road, bringing Bob Paisley's side to 68 points — a First Division record under the two-points-for-a-win system.
The title had already been secured against Aston Villa nine days earlier. Liverpool had since won 1–0 at Middlesbrough, leaving Leeds as their final league opponents. Paisley retained the eleven who had started the title-clinching match, with Phil Thompson captaining the side and Johnson alongside Kenny Dalglish in attack.
Johnson opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Liverpool doubled their advantage shortly before half-time when Case scored in the 42nd, with Dalglish providing the assist. A second Johnson goal in the 57th minute, again supplied by Dalglish, completed the scoring.
Liverpool finished without using substitute David Fairclough. Ray Clemence's clean sheet was his 28th in the league that season, leaving the champions with only 16 goals conceded across 42 matches. At the other end, the three at Elland Road took their total to 85.
Leeds ended their campaign fifth, on 50 points. Liverpool's final record was 30 victories, eight draws and four defeats. Once the remaining fixtures elsewhere had been played, Nottingham Forest finished second with 60 points, eight behind them.
