Ian Rush scored twice at the 23 August Stadium on 25 April 1984 as Liverpool beat Dinamo Bucharest 2–1 to reach the European Cup final. A 3–1 aggregate victory earned a meeting with Roma in Rome on 30 May.
Liverpool arrived with the one-goal lead secured by Sammy Lee at Anfield. Graeme Souness was booed whenever he touched the ball following the first-leg incident which had left Lică Movilă with a broken jaw, but supplied the pass for Liverpool's early opener.
A partly cleared corner reached Souness, who volleyed the ball back towards Rush. The striker escaped his marker and chipped the advancing Dumitru Moraru. It was his hundredth Liverpool goal and left Dinamo needing three to qualify.
Costel Orac recovered one in the 39th minute, curling a free-kick over Liverpool's wall. Dinamo were level on the day, but still needed two more because of Liverpool's away goal.
Liverpool held their position through the second half, with Steve Nicol replacing Kenny Dalglish. The decisive break came late on. Lee advanced on the right and sent the ball across to Ronnie Whelan. His low cross was not cleared, and Rush finished for his second.
Liverpool had won at every away ground on their route through the competition. Their fourth European Cup final would now be played on their opponents' home pitch.
