Rush scores four as Liverpool run riot at Goodison
Everton 0 Liverpool 5
Ian Rush grew up supporting Everton. At Goodison Park he gave them an afternoon they have never been allowed to forget.
Bob Paisley told his striker before the game that he would score a hat-trick. Rush went one better. He scored the only goal of the first half, then three more after the interval, the last of them five minutes from time. Mark Lawrenson scored the other as Liverpool beat Howard Kendall's side, which included a future Liverpool midfielder in Steve McMahon.
It is still Liverpool's biggest away win over Everton. Before that day, only Fred Howe had scored four for Liverpool in a Merseyside derby, back in 1935.
John Motson's verdict on Match of the Day summed it up: "Four for Rush, five for Liverpool and an awful day for Everton."
Liverpool went on to win the league that season. Rush finished with 25 goals against Everton, more than any other Liverpool player, and the afternoon is remembered in the final lines of Poor Scouser Tommy.
