Shankly's Liverpool put eight past Munich's singing goalkeeper

Liverpool 8 TSV 1860 Munich 0

TSV 1860 Munich came to Anfield as one of West Germany's best sides, Bundesliga champions the year before last. They went home having conceded eight.

Their goalkeeper was Petar Radenković, a showman who had sold hundreds of thousands of records as a pop singer. Bill Shankly's side gave him no time to perform. Ian St John scored after six minutes and Tony Hateley added a second three minutes later. Tommy Smith's penalty made it 3–0 at half-time.

The second half was worse for Munich. Roger Hunt scored twice either side of a Peter Thompson goal, three goals in three minutes, and Ian Callaghan added two more before the 70th minute. Six different players had scored in front of 44,812.

Munich's president, Albert Wetzel, could only admire it: "I have never seen a team shoot with such power from any position."

Munich won the second leg 2–1 a week later, but the tie had long been settled. Liverpool went through 9–2 on aggregate.
