Origi, Kelleher and an 18-year-old settle a 5–5 night

Liverpool 5 Arsenal 5 (Liverpool won 5–4 on penalties)

It started with an Arsenal own goal and ended with a teenager from Liverpool scoring in front of the Kop. In between came nine more goals.

Shkodran Mustafi turned the ball into his own net after six minutes. By the 36th minute Arsenal led 3–1, through Lucas Torreira and two from Gabriel Martinelli. James Milner's penalty made it 2–3 at half-time. Ainsley Maitland-Niles restored the two-goal lead, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Divock Origi pulled it back to 4–4, and Joe Willock's long-range shot put Arsenal ahead again with 20 minutes left.

They were moments from the quarter-finals when Origi equalised with an acrobatic finish in stoppage time.

The shoot-out was as tidy as the match had been chaotic. Milner, Adam Lallana, Rhian Brewster and Origi all scored. Caoimhín Kelleher, 20, saved from Dani Ceballos, the night's only miss. Curtis Jones, 18 and playing his first senior game at Anfield, then scored the winner.

It was only the second time in 66 years that Liverpool had conceded five at home. The other was also against Arsenal: a 6–3 League Cup defeat in 2007.
