Liverpool beat Beşiktaş 8–0 for a Champions League record

Liverpool 8 Beşiktaş 0

Liverpool went into their fourth Champions League group game, against Beşiktaş at Anfield on Tuesday 6 November 2007, with one point from three matches. A month earlier they had lost 2–1 to the same side. To be sure of going through, they had to keep winning.

Peter Crouch opened the scoring on 19 minutes. Yossi Benayoun added the second on 32, and RTÉ noted it was Liverpool's 500th goal in European competition. Liverpool led 2–0 at half-time.

Benayoun then scored twice in two minutes after the break, on 52 and 54 minutes, to complete his hat-trick. Steven Gerrard added the fifth. Ryan Babel scored with a back-heel on 77 minutes and got another three minutes later, and Crouch made it eight with two minutes left.

The 8–0 was the biggest winning margin the Champions League had seen. The club notes that Real Madrid have since equalled it. By RTÉ's account, it was Liverpool's biggest winning margin in Europe since they beat Oulun Palloseura 10–1 in 1980, and it came in Rafael Benítez's 50th European match in charge.
