Season overview
Liverpool finished sixth in the Premier League with 58 points after a season of changes in ownership and management. New England Sports Ventures completed its takeover on 15 October, ending Tom Hicks and George Gillett’s ownership. Roy Hodgson, appointed in July, was replaced by Kenny Dalglish on 8 January with Liverpool 12th in the table.
Dalglish initially returned for the rest of the campaign and signed a permanent deal in May. Fernando Torres left for Chelsea in January, while Luis Suárez and Andy Carroll arrived from Ajax and Newcastle United. Dirk Kuyt led the scoring with 15 competitive goals, including a hat-trick in the 3–1 home win over Manchester United.
Northampton Town knocked Liverpool out of the League Cup on penalties after a 2–2 draw at Anfield. Dalglish’s first match back ended in a 1–0 FA Cup defeat at Manchester United, and Braga ended their Europa League run in the round of 16. The league campaign closed with defeats by Tottenham and Aston Villa.
