Season overview

Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League with 60 points, securing a return to the Champions League but ending 30 points behind champions Arsenal. Gérard Houllier left after the campaign. His final league match was a 1–1 home draw with Newcastle United.

Steven Gerrard succeeded Sami Hyypiä as club captain in October. Harry Kewell arrived from Leeds United and Steve Finnan from Fulham, while Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle joined the squad from Le Havre. Michael Owen was leading scorer with 19 competitive goals; Kewell contributed 11 in his first season.

Liverpool did not win a trophy. Portsmouth ended their FA Cup run in a fifth-round replay, Bolton Wanderers won the League Cup fourth-round tie at Anfield, and Marseille eliminated them from the UEFA Cup 3–2 on aggregate in the fourth round. The league run-in included three successive wins over Manchester United, Middlesbrough and Birmingham City.

Notes on the record

Overview evidence: paragraph 1 — rsssf-league, lfc-houllier and lfch-games; paragraph 2 — lfc-captain, lfch-transfers, lfch-scorers and afv-scorer; paragraph 3 — lfch-games.

The captaincy article’s publication timestamp shows 14 October 2014 but its body explicitly dates the appointment to 15 October 2003. The summary uses October; publication and event dates are kept separate.

Le Tallec and Sinama-Pongolle are recorded on joining the squad in 2003, without an unverified claim about earlier contractual arrangements. Babbel’s loan is supported by his club profile.

Heskey’s May 2004 departure and Owen’s summer 2004 move are allocated to 2004–05. Houllier’s departure is mentioned as the end of his final campaign; Benítez did not manage a competitive match in 2003–04.
