Terry McDermott's volley gave Liverpool a 1–0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur on 8 March 1980 and a place in the FA Cup semi-finals. At White Hart Lane, one first-half finish was enough to continue a run in which Bob Paisley's side had yet to concede a goal.
Liverpool had beaten Grimsby Town 5–0, Nottingham Forest 2–0 and Bury 2–0 to reach the quarter-final. They kept the same starting eleven that had won the Merseyside derby a week earlier. Tottenham made an early change, replacing Ricky Villa with John Pratt after 18 minutes.
McDermott scored after 38 minutes. Ossie Ardiles' attempted clearance reached him near the corner of the penalty area; he lifted the ball and volleyed into the corner of the net. Recalling the goal in a later Liverpool interview, McDermott admitted that he still could not decide whether his first touch had been deliberate or simply poor control.
The finish remained the only goal before a crowd of 48,033. Liverpool had now won four FA Cup ties with an aggregate score of 10–0 and would meet Arsenal in the last four.
