Liverpool scored twice in two minutes at Old Trafford on Easter Monday 1972. By the end of the afternoon they had a third goal, another clean sheet and a new first-team player.
The 3–0 victory over Manchester United on 3 April was still goalless at half-time. Chris Lawler broke the deadlock on the hour, John Toshack quickly doubled the lead, and Emlyn Hughes completed the scoring late in the game.
For Bill Shankly’s side, the result left them second in the First Division, a point behind Derby County. Both had played thirty-seven matches, with five still to come.
United’s starting side included George Best, Bobby Charlton and Denis Law. Liverpool kept them out, then established a commanding advantage after the interval. Steve Heighway was credited with the assist for Lawler’s opening goal; Brian Hall supplied Toshack’s second.
With nine minutes remaining, Shankly replaced Toshack with Phil Thompson. The eighteen-year-old was making his senior debut for the club. Liverpool were already 2–0 ahead; Hughes added the third three minutes after the change.
Thompson’s appearance gives the match a significance beyond the result and the league table. The young player from Kirkby would become a central part of Liverpool’s defence, but he had begun his development as a midfielder. The club’s own account credits that grounding with helping him become comfortable carrying the ball out from the back.
He would make twenty appearances in the following season, sharing in Liverpool’s league championship and UEFA Cup success. In 1981 he would lift the European Cup as captain.
Those achievements lay well ahead when he came off the bench at Old Trafford. On this afternoon his task was to join a team seeing out an important away win in a close title race.
Liverpool left with two league points. Thompson left with his first senior appearance, earned in a match against Manchester United and completed without a goal conceded.
