John Aldridge scored twice as Liverpool came from behind to beat Wimbledon 2–1 in the Charity Shield at Wembley on 20 August 1988. Three months after Dave Beasant had saved his penalty in the FA Cup final, Aldridge supplied both goals in the league champions' victory over the cup holders.
Wimbledon had Simon Tracey in goal this time. Liverpool were captained by Ronnie Whelan, with Alex Watson starting in a defence missing Alan Hansen.
John Fashanu gave Wimbledon the lead after seventeen minutes, heading in Dennis Wise's cross from the right. Aldridge equalised before the half-hour after Tracey ventured outside his area to head clear. John Barnes passed to Aldridge, who scored with the goalkeeper stranded.
Tracey recovered to make important saves, denying Barnes in the first half and McMahon soon after the restart. Liverpool went ahead in the sixty-ninth minute when Barnes’s run down the left ended with a cross that Aldridge controlled and finished.
Wimbledon continued to threaten through Wise, and Peter Cawley tested Bruce Grobbelaar near the end. Liverpool held the lead to take the Shield before a crowd of 54,887.
