Liverpool retained the League championship on 14 May 1977 with a goalless draw against West Ham United at Anfield. The point took Bob Paisley's side to 57, beyond the reach of Manchester City, who finished their programme with 56. Liverpool still had one League fixture to play.
It was the club's tenth championship and Paisley's second in succession. With the FA Cup and European Cup finals still ahead, Liverpool had secured the first of the three trophies they were pursuing.
The draw completed an unbeaten home League programme: 18 victories and three draws from 21 matches. Only Middlesbrough, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham left Anfield with a point. That record provided the foundation for a title ultimately decided by a single point.
West Ham's needs were different. They ended the afternoon in 19th place with 34 points, still involved in the struggle against relegation. Their goalkeeper Mervyn Day kept Liverpool out, while Ray Clemence's clean sheet ensured the champions collected the point they required.
Liverpool began with Kevin Keegan and David Johnson in attack. David Fairclough replaced Johnson in the 70th minute, but neither side broke the deadlock before a crowd of 55,675.
The remaining League match was at Bristol City two days later. Beyond it came Manchester United at Wembley on 21 May and Borussia Mönchengladbach in Rome on 25 May. Those finals would determine how much more Liverpool could win; the championship was already theirs.
