Liverpool scored eleven. Nine players shared the goals.
The 11–0 victory over Strømsgodset at Anfield on 17 September 1974 established a new club record, but the distribution was almost as unusual as the total. Phil Thompson and Phil Boersma scored twice each. Of Liverpool’s ten outfield players, only Brian Hall did not score.
Bob Paisley was still in the opening months of his management when the Norwegian side arrived for the first leg of a European Cup Winners’ Cup first-round tie. A crowd of 24,743 watched a contest that offered little uncertainty once Liverpool began scoring.
Alec Lindsay converted an early penalty. Boersma added two before half-time, with Thompson and Steve Heighway also scoring to make it 5–0 at the interval.
Thompson’s first showed how freely Liverpool’s defenders could join the attack. In Michael Charters’s contemporary Liverpool Echo report, later reproduced by the club, the move began with Thompson passing to Lindsay inside his own half. He continued forward, received Lindsay’s return ball near the opposition penalty area and finished past Inge Thun.
Strømsgodset’s attempts to catch Liverpool offside did not provide an effective defence. The Echo’s assessment was of a sporting but comprehensively outmatched team, unable to disrupt Liverpool’s control.
There was a pause in the scoring after half-time, before Peter Cormack added the sixth. Thompson scored again, followed by Emlyn Hughes. Tommy Smith, Ian Callaghan and Ray Kennedy completed the total late on.
The return leg was considerably quieter: Liverpool won 1–0 to complete a 12–0 aggregate victory. The first night had settled the contest so emphatically that progression was scarcely in doubt.
