Víctor Muñoz marked his first Liverpool start with an equaliser eight minutes from time, rescuing a 2–2 draw against Nottingham Forest on an afternoon that left Andoni Iraola still waiting for his first competitive win in charge.
Liverpool had already recovered once through Alexander Isak, whose close-range finish cancelled out Dan Ndoye's opening goal. A Morgan Gibbs-White penalty restored Forest's lead before Muñoz struck, ensuring Iraola's first home league match produced the same score as his debut at Newcastle six days earlier.
The recoveries brought Liverpool two points from their opening two fixtures. They also left the head coach frustrated by another first half spent behind and by the failure to turn a stronger second-half display into victory.
Forest had done enough before the interval to make that recovery difficult. Their direct passing repeatedly brought their forwards into dangerous positions, with Jérémy Jacquet stretching to block Igor Jesus at close range after Ola Aina's cross had been headed back across goal. Ndoye also headed wide from James McAtee's delivery.
The breakthrough came in the 24th minute. Forest built from a long ball by goalkeeper Matz Sels, worked possession through Jesus and Gibbs-White, and released Ndoye to finish low across Alisson. The visitors' threat was not confined to the goal: Alisson later made an important save from Jesus to keep Liverpool within one.
Liverpool did have opportunities. Florian Wirtz turned and finished inside the area, only for a video assistant referee review to identify Jeremie Frimpong offside earlier in the move. Sels then denied a Wirtz header, while Muñoz failed to find the target from another opening created by Cody Gakpo.
Gakpo supplied the first equaliser on the hour. Sent forward by Wirtz, he turned away from defenders on the right and drove a low cross through the six-yard area. Isak arrived at the far post to score his first goal of the campaign.
For a time Liverpool had the momentum, but Forest regained their advantage ten minutes later. Substitute Liam Delap took a quick throw-in that released Neco Williams into the penalty area. Alisson came out, Williams went down after their collision, and the referee awarded a penalty. Gibbs-White converted.
The incident also exposed a source of touchline frustration. Iraola said afterwards that he had been trying to make three substitutions before the throw-in, with a problem involving the fourth official's board delaying the changes. He questioned why the replacements had not been allowed on; the penalty nevertheless stood.
Liverpool eventually introduced Kostas Tsimikas, Ryan Gravenberch and Rio Ngumoha in the 71st minute, followed by Ronald Araújo and Trey Nyoni six minutes later. Muñoz moved across to the right and provided the second equaliser from that side of the area.
Wirtz found him with a pass to feet. The forward turned and struck a rising shot that took a deflection and went in off the underside of the crossbar. Having won Liverpool's late penalty at Newcastle, he had now helped recover a point in each of his first two appearances.
Dominik Szoboszlai sent a late free-kick narrowly wide, but Liverpool could not complete the turnaround. Forest continued to defend their area and left Anfield with a point of their own.
Iraola praised Muñoz's persistence, including his willingness to keep taking on defenders after unsuccessful attempts. His assessment of the team was less forgiving. He attributed the improved second half to greater intensity and urgency, but made clear that the slow opening had cost Liverpool. Two comebacks had prevented defeat; neither had delivered the win he wanted.
