Terry McDermott scored against his former club as Liverpool beat Newcastle United 4–0 at Anfield on 25 March 1975. John Toshack's two goals and Kevin Keegan's early opener helped lift Bob Paisley's side to second place, one point behind Everton.
The result followed a 2–0 win at Tottenham three days earlier. Before that, Liverpool had drawn six successive league matches; now they had taken maximum points from two games without conceding.
Keegan gave them the lead in the seventh minute, with McDermott providing the assist. Toshack added a second shortly before the interval, leaving Newcastle two goals behind as they went in at half-time.
The decisive second-half spell arrived with twenty minutes remaining. Toshack scored again from Ian Callaghan's contribution, then McDermott made it four two minutes later, with Keegan supplying him. The pair involved in Liverpool's opening goal had reversed roles for the last.
For McDermott, it was an early Liverpool contribution against familiar opponents. He had played for Newcastle against Liverpool in the previous year's FA Cup final before Paisley brought him to Anfield later in 1974. Becoming a regular would take time: he made only 25 appearances across his first two Liverpool campaigns.
On this evening he had both made and scored a goal, while Toshack's double had supplied the central part of a convincing win. Newcastle had beaten Liverpool 4–1 at St James' Park in February; the Anfield meeting produced an equally emphatic result in the opposite direction.
Liverpool now had 43 points from 36 league games. Everton's 44 came from one match fewer, so the reduced gap did not put the championship entirely in Liverpool's hands.
The race still had further turns to take. Liverpool eventually finished runners-up, two points behind Derby County, but this late-March victory had renewed their challenge. After a succession of draws, Toshack, Keegan and McDermott had delivered a second successive win with six league matches remaining.
