Terry McDermott scored the European Super Cup's first hat-trick as Liverpool beat Hamburg 6–0 at Anfield on 6 December 1977. A tie level after the first leg finished 7–1 on aggregate, bringing Bob Paisley's side another European trophy in the year of their first European Cup.
Hamburg had qualified by winning the Cup Winners' Cup against Anderlecht. In the first leg at the Volksparkstadion, Ferdinand Keller put them ahead before David Fairclough equalised. Liverpool therefore began the return with an away goal, but no aggregate lead.
Kevin Keegan was in Hamburg's attack at Anfield, facing former team-mates including Phil Thompson and McDermott. Those two provided the first four goals between them. Thompson opened the scoring after 21 minutes; McDermott added the second before half-time.
McDermott played centrally in a midfield also containing Jimmy Case and Ray Kennedy. The Liverpool Echo's contemporary account singled out his work in the middle of that trio, where he could influence a performance the newspaper regarded as Liverpool's best of the season.
David Johnson replaced Steve Heighway at the interval. Before the hour, two more McDermott goals had completed his hat-trick and taken Liverpool four clear on the night. Hamburg now faced a 5–1 aggregate deficit with more than half an hour still to play.
Liverpool added two late goals. Fairclough, already their scorer in Germany, made it five before Kenny Dalglish completed the six-goal win. Ray Clemence and the defence kept Hamburg scoreless throughout.
The crowd was 34,931. Liverpool had won the Super Cup for the first time, with McDermott supplying half the goals in a second leg that settled the contest long before its end.
