Dick Forshaw scored a hat-trick in the First Division match at Anfield on 19 September 1925. Harry Chambers and Archie Rawlings added the other goals as Matt McQueen’s side won 5–0 before a crowd of 18,824.
The score alone suggests a match in which Liverpool were superior in every department. The contemporary Liverpool Echo assessment was more specific: United had shown considerable ability on the ball, but Liverpool were the more effective side in front of goal.
Forshaw opened the scoring in the first half. Liverpool reached the interval 1–0 ahead, leaving United with a recoverable deficit. The decisive separation came after the break, when Chambers scored the second.
Forshaw then added two more, completing his hat-trick and taking Liverpool four goals clear. Rawlings supplied the fifth late in the game. Four of the home side’s goals had come in the second half, with Forshaw responsible for three across the afternoon.
For Liverpool, the result brought a second league win from their opening five matches. Their record stood at two victories, two draws and one defeat, with nine goals scored and four conceded. More than half of those nine goals had arrived in this game.
